Old Post Card 1930’s

Built on land donated by local farmer, Mr. Robert Gill.

Constructed in Aislaby and Blue Bank Stone through public subscription. 

22ft tall, designed by French & Wilkins, a firm of Whitby Architects, and built by William Lawson from Sleights.  The Architects did not charge a fee.

Total Costs : Construction £360, Clock £35, Incidental Expenses £9,  

There was a deficit of £20, but £27 was collected at the unveiling ceremony November 1921, which was attended by Grinkle Miners’ Brass Band.

Refurbished by residents in mid 1990’s with metal railings and landscaping – funding from LEADER 2 and local fundraising.  Total costs £2000.

Clock overhauled by Potts of Leeds in 2010 with LEADER Small Scale Enhancements Scheme funding.  £800

Maintained by resident volunteers up to 2015 : (Toc H Society, Hinderwell Branch of the British Legion, LEADER Group). Model Agreement money from Scarborough Borough Council pays for Insurance and clock winding (via Hinderwell Parish Council).

Clock overhauled 2019 by Smiths of Derby/Potts of Leeds, through funding from North York Moors National Park, who will also pay for maintenance costs with this firm for the next ten years (£396 plus vat per visit, two visits per year).
